Hosted state lake depth surveys

Fishing automatically displays the available agency contour collections for Michigan (2,177 records), Massachusetts (265), Connecticut (138) and Washington (235). These are surveyed source records, not every lake in each state. Historical depths are feet, water levels vary, and the maps are not for navigation. Files load from this app as you pan, with mobile limits and cached offline viewing.

Sources and reuse terms: Michigan DNR, MassGIS survey and MassGIS reuse, Connecticut metadata / public domain, Ecology data source and Ecology metadata / reuse.

Agency georeferencing is preserved. Massachusetts geometry is agency-generalized by about 1.2 m per axis for display; other collections use six-decimal WGS84 reprojection. Source contours, original identifiers and supplied survey years/methods remain in the data. Four Michigan native-key fallbacks have unverified distinct lake identity; Washington feet are corroborated by companion depth-band metadata. Missing dates, acreage or county facts remain unknown. Native source catalog and payload checksums.

Public water access: Wisconsin and Minnesota

Green P markers identify official DNR public-access records. Wisconsin contributes 3,257 public launch and shore-fishing locations in a separate hosted snapshot, retrieved September 29, 2026. The DNR open-data record describes ramps and carry-in sites; Wisconsin DNR disclaimers apply. Abandoned launches are excluded. Unreported fees, hours and accessibility remain unknown. Non-DNR sites may not be actively maintained in the source inventory.

Minnesota DNR public water accesses load directly from its official service for small map views, capped at 300 records. Source alerts and ramp details are retained. The DNR data agreement permits derivative use with acknowledgment and restricts distribution/display of the data in its entirety. We show limited, attributed views, with no statewide mirror, resale or offline archive. A short in-memory cache reduces repeat requests. Source unavailability is labeled; hosted locations still work.

Public access records are not current opening reports or permission to cross other property. Verify current closures, fees and activity restrictions. Neither agency endorses this app. The official inventories and the community database below retain separate downloads and source terms.

Community fishing and launch locations

Our downloadable snapshot contains 2,831 community-mapped locations. It is incomplete and is not an inventory of every public access. Most locations have no access tag; those are labeled permission unconfirmed. Locations marked private or no access were excluded. Fees, hours and other restrictions can change. Pins for mapped ways and areas represent approximate centers, not verified entrances.

Data © OpenStreetMap contributors. The filtered database is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0, including attribution and share-alike requirements. WhereToDetect filtered and reformatted the records. The download includes the source timestamp, IDs and extraction query.

What is saved locally

USGS-produced data are generally public domain, but third-party content can have separate rights. See USGS copyrights and credits. We do not treat everything on a government website as automatically unrestricted.

Online layers and records

Public services can throttle, change, or stop. Our interactive API requests are paced, time out, and stop temporarily after throttling or failures. We do not automatically retry, rotate endpoints to evade limits, or proxy users through a shared server. These safeguards are not an uptime guarantee or an app-wide capacity reservation.

Hunting planning sources

Hunting property lines show live Wisconsin and covered Minnesota parcel records at close zoom. Nearby requests include owner names and parcel identity, with no stored owner archive. Records may be outdated, and ownership does not grant access. Wisconsin VPA and THAP polygons use the official DNR map. THAP is spring turkey scouting and hunting only; check current restrictions and signs.

Slope, hillside direction and route elevations use USGS 3DEP. Explicit degree and compass classes match the map legend. Route profiles sample at most 40 points and leave gaps where elevations are missing; gain and loss are approximate. Wetland habitat uses the USFWS National Wetlands Inventory, with mapping dates that vary by location and an official color key. These are inventory maps, not field surveys or legal wetland determinations.

Stand wind colors compare your saved preferred directions with the NWS hourly area forecast within 5 km of the forecast point. Wedges illustrate direction only, not scent distance, thermals or deer movement. Hunting live layers require a connection and are not included in offline topo packs. Scouting photos stay on-device and are included in JSON backups and files you explicitly share.

Land colors

Optional land colors use Wisconsin SCO parcel classifications, Wisconsin DNR managed parcels and Minnesota DNR wildlife management areas published by the Metropolitan Council. DNR interests can include easements and leases. These are approximate records, not surveys or legal boundaries; Wisconsin DNR terms apply. Check current agency and county information.

Only the current viewport plus a small movement margin is requested, without owner fields, and results are capped. Recent responses are reused in bounded tab memory for up to five minutes so panning and zooming need fewer requests. Partial coverage and failures are labeled. Nothing is mirrored or stored permanently. WI tax parcels can contain both enrolled and unenrolled portions. MFL open and FCL have specific permitted activities; other uses need owner permission. Uncolored or unclassified land is not proof of private ownership or public access. Colors do not authorize detecting.

Free lake-depth maps hosted with this app

Underwater contours for Lake Michigan (including Green Bay), Huron, Erie / St. Clair and Ontario are derived from NOAA NCEI / NGDC Great Lakes Bathymetry. NCEI states that products derived primarily from its data are not subject to US copyright protection and requests source acknowledgment. We host a simplified, spatially divided snapshot, not a chart-service mirror. Download the catalog, provenance and individual file list.

Dataset citations: Michigan (1996), Huron (1999), Erie / St. Clair (1999), Ontario (1999). Retrieved September 29, 2026. These compilations use older surveys. Source depths are meters relative to lake low-water datum; labels convert to feet. Popups retain original meters. Lines are simplified for phone display, not newly surveyed or high-resolution fishing charts. They are not current water depths and are not for navigation.

Only nearby sections load from this app. Viewed sections can work offline in the current app version, subject to browser storage; updates or browser eviction can remove them. No runtime NOAA request, paid chart provider or API key is needed. Lake Superior is also included as approximate 10-meter contours derived from NOAA's incomplete, roughly 90-meter draft grid. These dashed contours show broad lakebed shape, not detailed fishing structure. No land elevations or missing cells were converted into lake depths. The NOAA snapshot covers the Great Lakes. Two separate Wisconsin USGS lakebed surveys are described below. Minnesota uses the live source below.

Wisconsin USGS lakebed elevations

Violet contours for Honest John Lake (WBIC 2892400) and Bad River Slough (WBIC 2892100) come from the USGS 2025 Bad River and Kakagon survey release, published in 2026 with CC0 dedication. Source meters are absolute lakebed elevations relative to NAVD88 (Geoid2018), not water depth. No documented water-surface reference is supplied; no depths are invented by subtracting the highest raster value.

Derived 1 m contours are clipped to the actual survey footprint and verified DNR waterbody outlines, covering about 74% and 89% respectively. The 1 m raster is interpolated between 40 m / 80 m singlebeam transects; finer display does not add survey detail. Metadata documents April 29-May 1, 2025 work. These partial historical surveys are not navigation charts or permission to access tribal land or water.

The catalog retains the original raster, metadata and footprint URLs, checksums, coordinate transform, clipping method and source discrepancies. Published XML elevation ranges differ from the checksum-verified raster; contours use actual raster cells. These two small hosted files load locally and can remain available offline after viewing, subject to browser storage. Retrieved October 2, 2026.

Activity tools and live sources

Hourly weather and wind use the National Weather Service API. Streamflow uses the USGS Water Data API; timestamps are shown and records older than seven days are omitted. Forecasts and provisional gauge measurements are not field observations or navigation advice.

Minnesota lake contours use the Minnesota DNR Lake Bathymetry service. Survey depth is in feet, with incomplete lake coverage; it is not the current water level. The dataset's metadata references the DNR geographic data agreement. See the published General Geographic Data License Agreement: credit is required, data are provided as-is, and resale requires written permission. We credit Minnesota DNR and provide browser-direct viewing, without resale, export or an offline archive of these records. For Wisconsin inland lakes without an in-app overlay, older depth maps can be found through the DNR Lake Maps directory; species and access information through Fishing Finder; Minnesota surveys are linked through LakeFinder.

Deer boundaries use Wisconsin DNR deer management units and Minnesota DNR deer permit areas, subject to each agency's terms. Boundaries do not establish ownership, access or current seasons. Queries are limited to the current viewport, canceled when superseded, and capped at 150 units; Minnesota contours use up to three paced pages of 400 records, with a 40,000-point rendering budget. Hosted contours display before slower live sources finish. Partial results, empty coverage and service errors are labeled.

Lake names and lake search

Wisconsin and Minnesota lake labels use USGS Geographic Names Information System state extracts, retrieved September 29, 2026. The app hosts 6,516 Wisconsin and 9,465 Minnesota named lake/reservoir records, excluding historical features. Download the complete lake-name snapshot and source checksums. USGS-produced data are in the US public domain.

Names are independent of depth coverage and appear on aerial or satellite maps at zoom 10 and above, with fewer labels where space is limited. They identify reference points, not shorelines, boat launches, access rights or depth measurements. Unnamed lakes, some local names and unlisted states are absent. County and state help distinguish repeated names. The snapshot and search work on-device after loading, subject to browser storage.

Finding a place

Search supports Census town/place names plus 4,667 Wisconsin and Minnesota communities from USGS GNIS public-domain state extracts, named WI/MN lakes and reservoirs, or coordinates in latitude, longitude order. Download the community snapshot and provenance. County/state choices distinguish repeated names. Names are searched on-device, without a geocoder service; some local or alternate names may be missing. Street-address search is unavailable. Nearby town labels in history are approximate, selected from an on-device Census list within 30 km; they are not parcel jurisdictions.

Wisconsin lake identities, shorelines and linked documents

The app hosts 5,845 Wisconsin DNR lake identities and shoreline polygons, with exact DNR map/document links for 2,484 lakes. The official lake classification service provides waterbody IDs (WBIC), lake names, counties, acreage and reported maximum depth. Its source-specific use terms permit product use subject to DNR disclaimers. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources attribution is retained; no endorsement is implied. Retrieved October 2, 2026.

5,121 USGS reference points match a unique DNR lake only when the point is inside its water polygon, lake names agree and the county matches. Island holes are preserved. Conflicting IDs and empty geometries are excluded. Search retains unverified references and adds DNR lake identities independently. Repeated names show county, distance, lake facts and WBIC; a name alone never establishes the match.

Fishing enables Lake maps automatically. One toggle controls all available depth sources, loading nearby data as you pan. Find lake is optional search. Inland Wisconsin coverage remains incomplete; an outline or document link is not depth coverage. Selecting a verified lake outlines that waterbody and fits its full bounds. Reported maximum depth is a lake-wide source fact, not depth at your selected location. Shorelines are approximate display geometry, not entrances, current water levels or legal access boundaries. The official directory supplies exact map/document links, matched by WBIC and lake name. Original scans remain with their provider. Non-map links are labeled listed lake documents.

Burnett's county library and spatial audit identifies 233 intersecting lake polygons and 87 original map links using the U.S. Census Bureau 2026 county boundary. Registration metadata retains source checksums, survey dates, original depth units, control points and held-out errors. Verified placements use local files in browser memory, without uploads or hosting the scans. Historical shoreline differences and measured errors are shown; these maps are not for navigation. A PDF link or a shoreline alone does not establish aligned depth coverage. DNR scan reuse terms apply to source documents.

Current Burnett coverage: 22 lakes with partial public factual contours, 22 accepted historical placements with 90 independent held-out checks, 22 transparent source-chart contexts available only on the local loopback preview, and native source inspection of all 87 cached PDFs. Document links, placements and local previews are separate from public depth coverage.

Download the lake index, file list, matching audit and provenance. Lake search and selected shorelines load from this site, without runtime DNR requests. The index and viewed outlines can remain available offline in this version, subject to browser storage and updates. External documents require their provider. The manual generator caches raw responses and paces sequential source reads; it does not run from user map movement.

Central Sands lake-basin elevations

Pleasant Lake (WBIC 106900, Marquette / Waushara), Long Lake (1000800, Waushara) and Plainfield Lake (1012500, Waushara) have automatic violet 2 m contours. These are absolute elevations in meters, not water depths. Vertical datum and survey dates are unspecified. The source combines interpolated sonar / plant-survey bathymetry with LiDAR above the survey waterline; component footprints are unavailable, so historical shore terrain may be included. Lines are clipped to the verified lake outline and valid source cells. Raster overlap does not establish observed underwater coverage.

Source: Wisconsin DNR-linked CSLSdata package, copyright 2019 Carolyn Voter, MIT. The full copyright and license notice is included in each derived dataset. Exact source hashes, native georeference and WBIC provenance are retained. Files: Pleasant, Long, Plainfield. These sources do not fill Burnett lake-depth coverage.

Upper St. Croix measured river depths

Cyan dots use the USGS May 2022 Upper St. Croix River bathymetric survey, published with CC0 dedication. The hosted snapshot contains 4,473 selected positive cross-section soundings and 350 longitudinal 120-second averages. These are sparse measured river depths, not lake contours or a continuous river chart. Cross-section water depth is surveyed water-surface elevation minus bed elevation in the same NAVD88 datum. NAD83 source positions are transformed to WGS84; metadata records original source rows, units, sampling and transformation limits.

Labels show feet; original meter values remain in the downloadable data. Water levels change. No interpolation or invented depth lines fill gaps. This dataset does not imply depth coverage for nearby Burnett lakes. It loads from this app as you pan, without runtime USGS requests. Viewed files can work offline in this app version, subject to browser storage. Dataset catalog, source attribution and file checksum.

Clear Lake historical depth fragments

Clear Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2457600: thirty-five rendered water-only parts from thirty-two traced source paths at 5 ft intervals from 5 to 50 ft from the Wisconsin DNR July 1971 survey. Other contours remain undigitized. Original label gaps are preserved; no new depths are interpolated. Independent historic placement checks have a maximum mismatch of about 51 m. These are historical contour fragments, not individual soundings, a complete chart or current water depths.

Only factual numeric depth geometry is redrawn in this app's own symbology; original scan artwork, legend and lettering are not hosted. This is a factual-use interpretation based on Copyright Office facts guidance and map authorship guidance, not an explicit agency license or CC0 claim. Source attribution and DNR use terms are retained. Derived geometry and provenance. Not for navigation.

Wood Lake historical depth fragments

Wood Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2649800: seven digitized contour sections at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ft from the Wisconsin DNR August 1967 survey. Other contours remain undigitized; the original label gap is preserved. Independent historical placement checks have a maximum mismatch of about 30 m, excluding manual pixel-picking uncertainty of up to 25 native pixels. The modern southeastern spur has no validated source counterpart; source depths are not extended into it. Only factual geometry is hosted under the same documented interpretation above, with source attribution and DNR terms; no agency license or CC0 is claimed. Derived geometry and provenance. Historical partial coverage, not a complete chart or current depths. Not for navigation.

Big Trade Lake historical depth fragments

Big Trade Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2638700: seventeen water-only parts from twelve traced source paths at 5 to 35 ft from the Wisconsin DNR May 1968 survey. This derivative covers Big Trade only; Little Trade Lake and the isolated 39 ft sounding are excluded. Factual geometry uses the documented interpretation above with source attribution and DNR terms, without an agency license or CC0 claim. Derived geometry and provenance. Historical partial coverage, not current water depths or a complete chart. Not for navigation.

Spirit Lake historical depth sections

Spirit Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2650300: twenty-six traced 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 ft sections, about 22 km, from the Wisconsin DNR September 1969 survey. Western shallows, the north peninsula, southwest shallow bay and small shoals remain incomplete. Maximum independently checked placement mismatch about 31 m excludes hand-picked bank uncertainty. The isolated 27 ft sounding is not a contour. Only factual geometry is hosted with attribution under the interpretation above; no explicit agency license or CC0 claim. Derived geometry and provenance. Historical partial coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Ann Lake historical depth contours

Ann Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2676400: eight original ink sections forming ten water-only parts of the readable 3 ft and 5 ft contours from the Wisconsin DNR June 1973 survey. Printed labels and the original western ink break remain gaps. The isolated 6 ft sounding is excluded. Current lake water and the reviewed historical water boundary clip the result, including the historical island. Maximum independent placement mismatch is about 48 m; source-bank picking uncertainty is not included. The corrected training landmark and original trial are retained in the calibration audit. Only factual depth geometry is hosted under the interpretation above, without original lettering, scan artwork, a CC0 claim or an explicit agency license. Derived geometry and provenance. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Tabor Lake historical depth contours

Bass Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2675000: six traced source sections of the 5 ft contour, about 3.1 km, from the Wisconsin DNR May 1972 survey. This identifies one specific Bass Lake; same-name lakes do not share its data. Five printed label gaps and the original southern ink break remain open. Nearshore 3 ft contours are withheld where their ink contacts shoreline artwork, and the isolated 6 ft sounding is excluded. Lines stay inside verified current lake water. Maximum independent placement mismatch is about 44 m, excluding source-bank picking uncertainty. Only factual depth geometry is hosted under the interpretation above, without original lettering, scan artwork, a CC0 claim or an explicit agency license. Derived geometry and provenance. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Oak, Minnow and northern Bass Lake historical contours

Three more exact Burnett waterbodies have hosted factual geometry. Oak Lake, WBIC 2486600, April 1968: seven original 10 ft and 15 ft sections; isolated 16, 18 and 19 ft soundings are excluded. Minnow Lake, WBIC 2482900, June 1975: five deep loops at 35, 40, 45 and 50 ft; the isolated X symbol and ambiguous branching 30 ft curve are excluded. Bass Lake, WBIC 2451600, May 1975: three 10 ft arcs and one genuine 12 ft contour. This 67-acre lake is separate from the 236-acre Bass Lake above; their charts and source values are never interchanged.

Printed label gaps remain open. Shallow bands and other unreadable sections remain undigitized. Geometry is clipped to exact current WBIC water and, for Minnow and northern Bass, the reviewed original water footprint. Maximum independent historical placement mismatches are approximately 49 m, 36 m and 44 m respectively, excluding manual source-bank picking uncertainty. The original appendix pages request source identification; that notice does not establish an unrestricted graphic license. Only factual geometry is hosted under the interpretation above, without original artwork or an agency license claim. Derived geometry: Oak, Minnow, northern Bass. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Bashaw Lake historical depth contours

Bashaw Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2662400: five original 10 ft sections and two 15 ft deep-bean arcs from the Wisconsin DNR May 1969 survey. Elbow Lake historical depth contours

Elbow Lake, Burnett and Polk counties, WBIC 2463100: two original West 6 ft arcs and two separate East 8 ft arcs from the Wisconsin DNR May 1972 survey. The 1,753 literal source ink pixels form four source paths and six current-water parts, totaling 2.496 km; the northern West 6 ft arc clips into three parts. Printed label gaps remain open. The isolated East X is excluded, and 3/5 ft source strokes connected to chart marks remain undigitized. The source and current index both list 233 acres. West/East 93.03/96.77 ft water-level elevations on an assumed 1,000 ft reference are historical stage values, not depths.

Separate reviewed historical West and East basin footprints and the original East island intersect exact current WBIC water and island holes. Neighboring ponds and the uncertain southern cattail area are excluded; that conservative cut does not certify a literal shoreline. Three reviewers accepted the source and physical-feature placement. The original failed trial is retained after correcting three misread component-prefixed geographic IDs, with unchanged source pixels and other targets. Corrected RMS is 24.65 m and maximum independent placement mismatch is about 42 m, excluding manual source-bank picking uncertainty. Only factual geometry is hosted under the documented interpretation above, without original artwork or an explicit agency license. Derived geometry and provenance. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Water level 92.11 and assumed elevation 100.00 are elevation marks, not depths.

Four unchanged controls and five separate held banks retain maximum historical placement mismatch about 34 m, excluding manual picking uncertainty. Southern/eastern training errors reach about 39 m. Three conservative original water cores and one original island hole intersect exact current water. The old northeastern arm and uncertain banks are excluded; cuts do not certify surveyed shorelines. Original area is 110 acres; the current polygon measures approximately 81.77 acres. This is a separate WBIC from the 67- and 236-acre Bass Lakes. Only factual geometry is hosted under the documented interpretation above, without original artwork or an explicit agency license. Derived geometry and provenance. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Green Lake historical contours

Only factual geometry is hosted under the documented interpretation above, without original artwork or an explicit agency license. Derived geometry and provenance. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Dunham Lake historical deep contours

Dunham Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2651800: one northern 50 ft ring and two separate main-basin 60 ft rings from the Wisconsin DNR August 1967 survey. Three open source paths retain 1,128 literal ink pixels and contour-number gaps, totaling 1.055 km. The separate 50/62/63 ft spot soundings, southern deep loop and shallow bands remain undigitized. Source area is 243.32 acres; the current index rounds to 243 acres. Assumed elevation 104.97 and water elevation 97.00 are historical elevation marks, not new depths.

Exact current WBIC water intersects a reviewed conservative original in-water footprint; its edges exclude historical shore and marsh differences and are coverage cuts, not surveyed shorelines. Three unchanged controls and five different held banks retain maximum placement mismatch about 35 m, excluding manual source picking. Only factual geometry is hosted under the documented interpretation above, without original artwork or an explicit agency license. Derived geometry and provenance. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.

Crooked Lake historical northern-basin contours

Crooked Lake, Burnett County, WBIC 2459200, 254 listed acres: three original 10 ft arcs retain 920 source ink pixels and 1.338 km of linework in the northern main basin. The Wisconsin DNR original prints mapped May 1972; this is compilation month, with actual depth-observation date unspecified. Stage 91.93 and assumed elevation 100.00 are elevations, not new depths.

Two printed four-section grid references and one bank retain four independent unused shoreline checks, maximum historical placement mismatch about 32 m, excluding manual source picking uncertainty. The exactly determined training fit is not independent accuracy evidence. DNR LandNet grid references are cartographic, not surveyed monuments. Exact current water intersects a reviewed original in-water core covering 38.41% of the modern polygon; its edges are coverage cuts, not surveyed banks. This is a separate lake from Crooked WBIC 2459100. Only factual geometry is hosted under the documented interpretation above, without original artwork or an explicit agency license. Derived geometry and provenance. Partial historical coverage, not current depths. Not for navigation.
